Why Cofertility

We’re creating a future in which people aren’t constrained to having children according to outdated standards — whether by society, finances, or their own biology.

Our stance

While modern science has evolved, the egg freezing and donation experiences are overdue for change. Here’s why we’re up for the challenge.
We believe egg freezing can contribute to gender equality.

We stand for reproductive choice. And egg freezing is just that — a choice that a woman makes over her own body and future. The American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) states that egg freezing “promotes social justice by reducing the obstacles women currently face because their reproductive window is smaller than men’s.” We couldn’t agree more, and we’re proud to do our part to lessen constraints placed on women by offering more accessible egg freezing options.

That said, we acknowledge that egg freezing and egg donation are not without their critiques. The processes come with big questions, and we want to be transparent about where we stand.

We believe women have the right to be experts on their fertility.

Many of us have faced reproductive challenges when building our families and wished we knew more about our own bodies when we embarked on our own fertility journeys. If more women were properly educated about their reproductive health and options, or had the opportunity to freeze their eggs earlier, they might not face those same roadblocks. We believe the lack of fertility education today is deeply anti-feminist, and we’re here to change that.

We believe matching with an egg donor should be a positive experience.

It sounds obvious, right? But the largely unregulated egg donation market has led to some sketchy practices. We want to bring ethics and transparency to an industry where most agencies don’t even have an “About Us” page. If you’re looking for an egg donor — either due to infertility, cancer, a genetic condition, or not having eggs (hi, gay dads!) — you may already feel like the odds are stacked against you. The last thing you need is to feel like you’re “shopping” for a human who plays a critical role in your family-building journey. And we’ll never make it feel that way.

We agree with ASRM that egg donor compensation can open the door for exploitation. Plus, a 2021 Harvard study found that 62% of donor-conceived adults felt the exchange of money for donor gametes was wrong, and 41% were troubled by the fact that money was exchanged around their conception. By allowing our donors to freeze their eggs as part of the process, our unique model honors everyone involved.

We believe anonymous egg donation is a thing of the past.

Our model honors freezers, donors, families, and ultimately, donor-conceived children. While other agencies make false promises to donors of “anonymous” egg donations, we tell the truth. In a world of ubiquitous genetic testing, no gamete donation can be guaranteed to be anonymous. We work with all parties involved to build a relationship that feels right for them, and we encourage both donors and intended parents to consider the donor-conceived child’s best interest.

We believe egg donors should have a say in their donation.

We believe parents and donors should both opt-in to the match, and be on the same page for the type of relationship they want. Our donors specify their communication preferences up front, giving donors and families real options in the process.

We believe in the equal right to parent.

LGBTQ+ families have historically faced more rigorous scrutiny and challenges than heterosexual families regarding their rights to be or become parents. For example, discriminatory laws make it difficult in some states for both parents to be on the birth certificate, solely because of their gender. We stand by protections for LGBTQ+ parents and their children, and support all families equally.

We believe donor-conceived children shouldn’t be an afterthought.

Part of serving families is recognizing the unique life experience of the humans we’re helping bring into this world. These children are so precious and wanted, and the world is just starting to understand the nuances of not sharing genetics with one’s parents. This is why we provide families with evidence-based tips and guidance for raising happy, healthy donor-conceived children, as well as tools for families and donors to communicate at a mutually-agreed upon level.

We are committed to listening to donor-conceived people, following research in this space, and continually sharing our findings to promote a positive experience for all.

We believe family building is not a one-and-done transaction.

Matching with a donor is just the beginning. Unlike traditional donor egg agencies, where the relationship ends after a transaction, we offer a lifetime of support for families. This includes educational materials, support groups, and communication tools available to family by co members and families indefinitely.

"Cofertility’s Split program was truly a no-brainer for me. There is something incredibly beautiful about a single process helping two families plan for their futures at the same time. I felt deeply honored to be part of something that creates so much hope and possibility for others, while also giving me peace of mind and confidence about my own path forward."

“Accepting the need for a donor, choosing the right one, and welcoming a child into the world is an incredibly personal journey. Cofertility made it easier every step of the way. We stay in touch with our wonderful donor, but also the team. It means so much to know that Cofertility is part of our baby’s village. After all, they helped bring him here.”

"Being able to take proactive steps for my future has brought me a deep sense of peace. I don’t think I would have frozen my eggs if not for Cofertility and the guidance they provided. The opportunity to help another family grow was incredibly motivating and Cofertility did an amazing job making a complex, emotional process as supportive as possible."

“We feel so lucky to have come across Cofertility as we're making the most important decision of our life. They've taken what can traditionally be such a depersonalized journey and made it into something deeply emotional. Their team really takes the time to get to know Intended Parents and Split members to make sure it's a perfectly aligned match all around."

"If I can assist in bringing pure joy into another family’s life, I’d do it willingly, with a full heart. I watched my best friend go through a miscarriage, only to find out she wouldn’t be able to have kids of her own. It was one of the most heartbreaking experiences I’ve ever witnessed. I vowed that if I could ever help someone in that capacity, I would.”

"We wholeheartedly recommend Cofertility to anyone on a family-building journey. The process felt compassionate, transparent, and human. Being able to connect directly with our donor and know that she had agency in the process made all the difference. We are currently 24 weeks pregnant with a baby girl! We are so grateful to our donor and to Cofertility."

“Cofertility helps solve a common problem: our eggs are healthiest in our 20s, but freezing them is too expensive. It feels amazing to help another family while also investing in my future. I am more confident moving into my 30s knowing I have eggs stored if I need them. I’m so grateful I had the opportunity, and recommend it to anyone who wants that safety net.”

“When exploring options, Cofertility felt like a breath of fresh air, filled with brilliant, dedicated people who were genuinely invested in helping me achieve my dream of fatherhood. Their donors were incredible, and I felt they had a deeper, more personal investment in the process because they were also receiving eggs to help build their own families in the future.”

“The entire process with Cofertility was smooth, easy, and far less intimidating than I expected. I chose to complete two cycles and felt fully supported throughout. I appreciated having total control and knowing I was part of an ethical program that helps make egg freezing more accessible. I was also thrilled to match with and be able to help a same-sex couple."
